May Update - Tryline Player Ratings and Weather Features

For far too long, we relied on fantasy points and yes, the VB hard earned index as the measurement of player impact and performance in a match. There's a key flaw in this - it does not factor in the current score and the time left in a match.

Currently, a try while 40+ ahead is scored the same as a match winning try in the last minute. A player coming off the bench who turns the game around in the last 20 minutes rarely exceeds 40 fantasy points.

Tryline Rating is powered by 54 distinct data points for each player and 5 game-dependant scales, every 20 seconds to arrive at a single performance score out of 10.

How It Works

To help you understand the main drivers of this complex system, we have summarised it in some dotpoints.

• The minimum rating is 3 and the maximum is 10. Players start at 6 and must play at least 10 minutes
• A 10 is very hard to achieve. Players must make very little errors, perform the best AND for the full duration of the game
• A 6-7 represents an average performance. Players performed duties reasonably. Players who don't make errors but don't contribute much either fall to the 5-6 range
• Position - Different positions have different data points that contribute to their rating
• Score and Time - If a player in a team that's already winning by 30+ scores in the 78th minute, the impact of the Try is not as high compared to a game winning try in the 78th minute
• Discipline - The impact of poor discipline (e.g. sin-bin, error) is increased based on the effect it has on the match

A great performance no longer gets lost in the stats by a sin-bin late game when already winning by 40-10. Similarly, an error riddled performance leading to multiple opposition tries won't get lost in the stats just because they scored 1 try themselves.

Overall, the Tryline Player Rating is better at capturing and helping recall the moments everyone actually remembers. It is not perfect, there is still a long way to go. As it stands, the Tryline Player Rating is the most advanced algorithm to quantify player performance in the rugby league for fans.

Content Creators and Tester Feedback

The V1 rating system has been reviewed by content creators and some testers of Tryline.

• Everyone agreed it's a better system to quickly understand the match compared to fantasy points
• Majority agreed there is a moderate-high correlation with eye and logical observations

Weather Forecast

In the match preview, you can now find weather forecast including the conditions, temperature, wind and dew potential for the match. Weather forecasts become available roughly 4 days in advance before the kick-off time in the match preview section.
